McCain Falters in the 1st Presidential Debate

The first presidential debate held at Oxford Mississippi, dealt a huge blow to McCain. The topic that was discussed for the majority of the debate was foreign affair based, such as the war in Iraq, Iran, Israel, etc. While senator McCain seemed to continually point out how inept and inexperienced Barack Obama was (specifically with foreign affairs), Obama held his ground and repeatedly said that McCain "is right". To many of the American public, it would seem that McCain was the grandfatherly bully while Obama was innocent child with the candy he was not supposed to take in his pocket. Although there were some scuffles, there were no knockout blows to either of the opponents. According to Fox 6 News, Obama has gotten a boost as a result of the debate. While Obama has gone immediately back on the campaign trail in order to strengthen his lead over his opponent, McCain decided to take the Saturday off and go to his home in Virginia; kinda a stupid move.

Obama lost many great opportunities to slam McCain for his policies. As a Democrat, he could have pulled out the natural argument of McCain being part of the party that supports deregulation...and simple bare-bones oversight.

It kills me to say this, b/c in the past, I have been a major proponent of deregulation (everyone makes mistakes, my views are shifting some), but the fact remains that deregulation has bene simply foolish.

On another note, it was pathetic how both candidates responded to the economy. Neither man even mentioned openly that with a $700 billion expenditure, there will have to be MAJOR budget cuts.

And yes, if these folks do in fact support printing more money, which may very well be the only good option, these guys SHOWED NO POLITCAL COURAGE AT ALL, b/c they did not even hint at the possibility that we don't worry about flooding, or earthquakes, or tornadoes, or locusts, when the house is up in flames. Seriously...their performance was pathetic.

They better pick good Sec. of Treasuries, or we're going to have a tough time when we get out of college.

Although neither candidate really won the debate, Obama did what he needed to do which was stick to the economy. If the debate had really been focused on foreign policy, Obama probably would have struggled. Neither candidate made any huge mistakes but McCain seemed less credible because Obama constantly corrected his accusations. McCain's references to his experience only made him seem old.

It's possible to say that since Obama was up and the polls and continues to rise, he doesn't have to win any of the debates. He just has to make sure he doesn't lose.

Don't look for Obama to go for the knock-out blow. He might not need to. McCain may need to see if he can get Obama to hit the mat, but chances are if Obama can make it to the end of the 15th round, he'll win by a referee decision. (That was all a boxing metaphor, but it works!)
